The SIRIUS Puppy Raising Initiative for Dog Professionals: Breeders, Veterinarians, Pet Stores, Trainers, and Shelters

_SIRIUS_Initiative2.jpg
  • Breeders, Veterinarians and Pet Stores are the first point of contact with puppies and any successful puppy raising program depends on you. Please do your best to ensure that puppy owners contact trainers as early as possible to prevent them from going to shelters.
  • Puppies must be safely socialized to people and taught to enjoy being hugged and handled (restrained and examined) before they are three months old, otherwise, during adolescence they will likely become wary and fearful and maybe aggressive towards people. Socialization is an ongoing process and must start very early and is on ongoing process.
  • Puppies need to be raised with housetraining, chewtoy-training and alone-time-training programs up and running from the outset in order to prevent housesoiling, destructive chewing, excessive barking and separation anxiety.
  • Puppies benefit from early manners training — lure/reward training is as quick and easy as it is enjoyable.

  • Start out ahead by searching for a puppy that has been raised with errorless housetraining and chewtoy-training programs underway, that has been safely socialized with and handled by at least a hundred people and has been taught some basic manners.
  • Prevent housesoiling, destructive chewing, excessive barking and separation anxiety by starting your puppy’s errorless housetraining, chewtoy-training, and alone-time-training programs the very first day he/she comes home.

Lures & Rewards - Teaching Sit, Down and Stand

This is one way to teach these behaviours and others which allow you to work with your dog without any physical force.

Week 2 Part 1 (SIRIUS Berkeley Puppy 1)

In Week 2 puppies practice and improve their position changes and “Leave It.” They learn “Settle” for longer duration downs and are introduced to the “Stay” command. Owners begin to phase out the use of food treats as a lure, but continue to use it regularly as a reward.

Week 6 Part 1 (SIRIUS Berkeley Puppy 1)

In Week 6, the last class of Puppy 1, the owners test their pups for stays in all three basic body positions, they review the Take It & Leave It game and see what an advanced Leave It can look like. The pups demonstrate how difficult a simple sit command can be when there’s a puppy play session in progress, and the owners learn the importance of practicing around distractions.

Digging

Dogs dig to bury bones, and later to dig them up again. Dogs dig cooling hollows in the summer, and warming pits in the winter. Dogs dig after eavesdropping on private ultrasonic conversations of subterranean critters. Bitches dig dens when they are pregnant. Dogs dig out of boredom, and dogs dig to escape. But by and large, most dogs dig for the sheer fun of it.

Dogs Don’t See Your Problem

Lifestyle Training

If you want your puppy to obey each family member in all settings and situations, then every member of the family must train the pup in every setting and situation. In order to teach your puppy to respond here, there, and everywhere, it needs to be trained here, there, and everywhere. The secret is to train your puppy little but often — at least fifty tiny training sessions a day — with only a couple of sessions lasting for more than a few seconds.

Integrate Training and Games

Playing games with lots of rules is a fun way to train your dog and exercise her mind. Your puppy will learn that games have rules and that rules are fun. Training becomes a game, and games become training.

Quantum Leap 2: Reduce Number of Food Rewards

Even after youve stopped using food as a lure, it is valuable to continue using food as a reward, but it is important to be selective, rewarding only your dogs best responses.

Teaching Bite Inhibition

Please read this section extremely carefully. I shall repeat over and over: teaching bite inhibition is the most important aspect of your puppy's entire education.

Certainly puppy biting behavior must eventually be eliminated. We cannot have an adult dog playfully mauling family, friends, and strangers in the manner of a young puppy. However, it is essential that this be done gradually and progressively via a systematic two-step process: first, to inhibit the force of puppy bites and second, to lessen the frequency of puppy mouthing.

Ideally, the two phases should be taught in sequence, but with more active puppy biters you may wish to work on both stages at the same time. In either case, you must teach your puppy to bite or mouth gently before puppy biting behavior is eliminated altogether

Destructive Chewing

Chewing is essential for maintaining the health of your dog's teeth, jaws, and gums. Puppies especially have a strong need to chew to relieve the irritation and inflammation of teething. Dogs chew to relieve anxiety and boredom, as well as for entertainment. Your dog’s jaws are his tools for carrying objects and for investigating his surroundings. Essentially, a dog’s approach to all items in his environment is “Can I chew it?”
